Dominique Fils-Aimé- Mind Made Up (Track Review)

Written by Grayson Jones

When it comes down to it, it's up to you to decide where to draw the line. Today I listened to Dominique Fils- Aimé and found out where enough was enough for her.

Mind Made Up is the 3rd single from Dominique’s 3rd album, titled: Three Little Words. The album is a complete work of art, but what I want to talk about is what Dominique brings to the table on this piece. The song is vocalized by the queen herself, arranged by an accompaniment of an instrumentalist; we are blessed with a smooth, slower, swing beat that compliments the hook of this track. Around my 3rd or 4th listen I was compelled with confusion.

What I gained from the lyrics, was a point of view. The time did not age Dominique’s relationship well, and she is thinking of leaving it all behind or staying in the relationship she is unhappy in. I believe the indecisive action of leaving the relationship in the first place only built more turmoil towards whether or not she should chase her happiness without her man. “I Made up My Mind... I won't be here tomorrow.. You won't get to see me grow!” These are a few excerpts from her main chorus which speaks volumes in its contexts.

The piece at that point is at its climax with bright trumpets, and open drums. Although, losing someone important to you can be saddening, ripping the band-aid off completely can be satisfying– we had a chance to enjoy that first hand here. Vocally, we should all be humbled, the album as a whole creates a musical sense in a plethora of dynamics. The runner up favorite of mine is While we Wait, which is on on the same album. The Arranger of the composition is none other than bassist/composer Jacques Roy. Take a dive into Three Little Words, and explore the prowess of Dominique Fils-Aimé out now!
