Phillip Johnson Richardson aka Phil.- Whiskey Neat (Tiny Desk Submission)

Written by Grayson Jones

We captured the essence of Phillip Johnson Richardson aka Phil. on the track Whiskey Neat by describing him as calm, neat, and old-fashioned. This portrayal is especially evident in his Tiny Desk Submission, which we focused on for the video. The track serves as an ideal showcase for Phil.’s effortless performance, witty wordplay, and undeniable charm. The film itself is shot in warm amber or sandy tones, giving the visual a vintage feel that complements the song’s nostalgic vibe. Interestingly, the main ingredient in the track; whiskey, adds an ironic touch to the old-fashioned aesthetic.

What I find particularly unique and special about the video, which may not be as apparent in the track itself, is the staging of the performance. In the video, you see Phil. and his band seated in school chairs with desks attached. This setup enhances the laid-back, easygoing vibe that Phil. effortlessly exudes throughout the performance. It feels as though he is casually performing for friends in a relaxed setting, rather than putting on an orchestrated show.

Another aspect that I appreciate is the seamless coordination between Phil and his band. Their ability to set up, change positions, and adjust sounds without missing a mark speaks to their exceptional talent and cohesion. The background singers, in particular, are so in sync with each other that their performance sounds as if it required no post-production work at all. The entire presentation comes across as natural and spontaneous, underscoring the genuine chemistry between Phil and this band. As I’ll reiterate, this effortlessness is a main standout feature of this Tiny Desk performance.
