PaperStacks- Rooftop/ No More Topangas (feat. Holly Mae) [Track Review]

Written by Grayson Jones

Back in the day, flipping a record to its B-side meant discovering a whole new song. Today, producers can switch up a song's feel in just a single measure. Rooftop/No More Topangas burst onto the early summer scene with infectious joy. The A-side leans into a spacious R&B style, anchored by Holly Mae's feature that explores themes of love and longing for a lost love.

On the B-side, things take a sharp turn. After a slight ritardando, It kicks off with a movie director's voice saying, "Alright, cut and print, beautiful!"—like the end of a honeymoon phase. The track slows down dramatically, introducing raw rap over a boom-bap loop, reminiscent of tracks from Mick Jenkins or classic J.Cole. PaperStacks steps up with slick flows, embodying a smooth-talking, player-like persona.

By the way, “Topanga” references a free-spirited girl from a '90s sitcom, often seen as carefree and not quite wife material. These contrasting sides of the same song define its dynamic, keeping the vibe fresh and leaving you hooked from start to finish.
