"Try" by Mama Tjutju is a deeply personal reflection and a vow to oneself to uphold self-respect and value. Tjutu uses the opportunity to express feelings of having been misled and manipulated, admitting to the pain of selling themselves short. The line “Stop looking at me like that. It commodifies me,” stands out to me as a bold declaration of rejecting objectification and the reduction of one’s worth to mere transaction.

While the song’s melody is smooth, calm, and harmonious, it doesn’t carry the catchy hooks of typical pop music. Instead, it offers something much more intimate— a journal entry set to music.
