Mak Ro (Artist Review)

Written by Imani Wj Wright

A couple of week ago, I was sitting in the car with a couple of friends, just returning from a night in New York. Most of us were tired, but definitely in good spirits. Regardless of how good we felt, exhaustion was nonetheless taking over. But then, there was a shift in the energy of the vehicle. A song had come on while I was listening to artist submissions for the week- It was Mak Ro's "Bones". Everyone had the same question: "Who's that?" I checked my phone and answered: "Bones, by Mak Ro". Of course I noted this piece and headed to the next one.

Guess what? Back to back, we ran into GOLD. It felt like San Francisco in the mid 1850s. Mak Ro's record "Sin" was another banger from the duo's latest project, Love in the Dark. Oh, and needless to say, at this point the entire car was fully awake from the sounds of Mak Ro.

There's so much attention being paid to every sound on this project. You can hear the time and focus woven into the creation of all 8 tracks. The soul in these vocals float seamlessly through your speakers, to your ears and in YOUR soul. At times there's a pain you can't help but sympathize with, intertwined with a confidence and veracity you wish to have in your every day life.

You also get a variation in sound from this duo. On one hand, you have tracks like "Moth" that are full of what sounds like upright bass and jazzy percussion, while songs like "Cold" have a much more minimal and dark sound.

Mak Ro may soon become one of your favorite musical groups. They defintley have something for you...
