Amen- Solo Dolo (Video Critiques)

Written by Lucas “Lukey Lenz” Ballard

In the last couple of years there has been a large influx of women implementing their rap skills and solidifying that they, too, can be a force in the industry. With artists such as Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, RiRi, Megan Thee Stallion and a multitude of other charismatic women, comes another. Amen Turner’s “Solo Dolo” is an electrifying track that distinguishes her persona from other “basic” women. She makes it a point of emphasis that while many people rely on others as sources of revenue and entertainment, she does not, and is fine operating on her own. This is stated in the beginning and in the hook of the song: “I’m cool with myself, don’t roll with a clique.” So many are followers as opposed to leaders and she makes sure you understand it.

Along with her immaculate flow and delivery, Amen shows her boss status in her music video. Directed by Dakota Lim and Jammy, they capture the artist in the California Hills. We are initially presented with Amen in all white, running from a distance in a sky blue and green, dream-like arena. The settings in this video are very colorful, and whether it is the golden-yellow background paired with Amen’s shadow or the tonal colors seen when she is counting blue benjamins on a cushy couch, it is apparent both director and talent knew how to interpolate a relation between lyrics and visuals. Go check out Amen Turner’s “Solo Dolo.”
