Alma Jette– Bambi (Track Review)

Written by Pat Moran

Mary Bryce may have drawn upon the grandly gothic chamber pop of Welsh songstress Cate Le Bon to create her musical alter ego Alma Jette, but “Bambi,” the standout single on Jette/Bryce’s album I Found a Reason, blazes its own trail.

As the songs opens, Bryce’s languorous vocals drift so high above chiming piano that they threaten to dissolve into airy harmonics. Deftly arching before descending into free fall, Bryce’s voice flutters like fairy wings, but her lyrics piece the heart.

“I used to be so lonely/Now it’s not so bad/I wish you were the only/Memories I had”

Amid plangent strummed guitar, Bryce’s longing vocal deepens, leaving the realm of memories for the world of emotions. The song’s sweeping strings and reverberating piano adopt a rolling, almost playful R&B vibe

“I like to talk about Bambi/I like to dance in the dark/I like to hold your hand in the park/I like to lean into the spark”

After William Sterling Steffen’s sashaying saxophone solo, verse and chorus repeat with sass and sultry vigor. Shadowed by grimy subliminal guitar, the saxophone returns. It coils and corkscrews before falling gently to earth, bringing “Bambi” to a close.
