ADopted Enemy: A Prolific Enigma [SwanoDown Report]

Written by Imani Wj Wright

When it comes to ADopted Enemy, where do we even begin? There don't seem to be many words that precisely pinpoint this enigma. To refer to this artist as using words like "unique" or "individual" simply doesn't do him or the rest of us any justice. It's deeper than that. You see, some people create music/art with the hopes of being good enough to grasp an audience. Though, Enemy's approach to art is so avant-garde, you're naturally captured in the midst of his output.

There isn't a true defined structure to Enemy's records. And there are many of them, Enemy's output has to put him in the realm of one of the most prolific artists of this generation (in any genre). You're constantly kept on your toes with satirical lyricism, hard-hitting but untraceable instrumentation, and witty one-liners.

Enemy's project, Psychology Anthology: Part ii is one he refers to as a "comedy album", No, not in the Richard Pryor on Sunset kind of way, but it's simply FUNNY. Genuinely.

"Psychology Anthology: Part ii is a satire-driven rap album—think of it as the “Scary Movie 2” or “Not Another Teen Movie” of rap. It plays with the tropes and expectations of the genre. I use humor as a tool—not just for laughs, but to highlight contradictions and raw emotions in a way that feels unexpected. The delivery, the writing, and the energy all come from a place of a kind of reckless self-awareness, much like those parody films that both mock and celebrate their influences," Enemy explained.

When you speak with ADopted Enemy, you know you're in the midst of someone who has complete control and understanding of their craft. Though his art may not be linear, it is undoubtedly in his full control. Having listened to many artists in my career as a journalist, that is what separates the haves and the have nots- control and accuracy, like a Cy Young pitcher.

"My creative process is deeply instinctual— I try to tap into pure, unfiltered expression. The best moments happen when I reach a state in which I’m almost blacking out, letting ideas flow in an intense stream-of-consciousness way. It’s unfiltered and even unpredictable for me, kind of like my subconscious is taking over," Enemy said.

"I love when a song surprises even me while I’m making it. That’s why I’ll say 'I’m possessed but by the right thing though” [Enemy laughed], I feel like I’m possessed by myself, my true self, free from fear and attachment. I trust that impulse, and then I shape it into something that still carries meaning but keeps that raw, off-the-cuff feel," He continued.

A recent track by Enemy, "Sorry Knot. Sorry 2033" gives you a hard-hitting free flowing sound like Playboi Carti and Bat Boy Bankie combined. You can't help but turn it all the way up, get your moshpit adrenaline rushing and jump to the ceiling! It's also a testament to Enemy's versatility.

"I want people to feel a mix of amusement and deep connection. low brow and high brow moments fused… Like they’re watching something chaotic, funny, and oddly profound all at once. My music makes fun of itself while also being serious in its execution— it creates a paradox where people don’t know whether to laugh, think, or turn up," The multifaceted artist said.
