Avara (Artist Review)

Written by Imani Wj Wright

I've been one to listen to music in phases. There may be a month where I'm listening to nothing but AC/DC and Guns N' Roses, then another month where I'm bumping almost nothing but Future and Playboi Carti. However, do you know what stays consistent in my rotation? Alternative Soul/RnB. Artists like SZA, Frank Ocean, and H.E.R. are constants. And Avara's style fits right into that soundscape.

Needless to say, I'm very particular when it comes to my alternative soul, simply because I've heard so much good music, and subsequently, a lot of artists who try to "fake" the sound. Listen though, some artists just have it. There's a level of confidence, authentic emotional delivery, and smooth sense of musicality that has to massaged and kept afloat naturally. Avara delivers repeatedly on her ep, been some time

During songs like "choose the pace", and "been some time (need u)", Avara's raspy, sultry vocals are intertwined with her just as seductive lyricism- this is especially true on "choose the pace". There is no lack on innuendos, and double entendres. It's a fun listen. Even though Avara is being straight-forward in her message, she's subtle in her approach. Did you catch it? Your loss... That's how it feels while partaking in Avara's sonic experience. She dangles the fruit above her love interest, now it's up to them to grab it and digest.

Need to add some spice to your night? Listen to Avara
